Spartacus, the genre-defining epic from director Stanley Kubrick, is the legendary tale of a bold gladiator (Kirk Douglas) who led a triumphant Roman slave revolt. The final film of his career was Eyes Wide Shut, unfortunately, the director died six days after seeing a final cut of the film with family and friends at the age of 70. This then led to a collaboration with Kirk Douglas on two films, Paths of Glory and Spartacus after Douglas acquired the rights to the novel by Howard Fast. He would bear control over most aspects of the filmmaking process, even down to painstakingly researching his films and staging scenes, working in close coordination with actors and other collaborators which resulted in several conflicts with his cast. About the director A demanding perfectionist Stanley Kubrick was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and photographer. He began his film career on shoestring budgets and made his first major Hollywood film The Killing in 1956. Featuring a cast of screen legends such as Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Jean Simmons, John Gavin and Tony Curtis, this uncut and fully restored masterpiece is an inspirational true account of man's eternal struggle for freedom. This film would also mark the end of their working relationship as they were at odds over the script and disputes over filming. Newly restored from large format 35MM original film elements, the action-packed spectacle won four Academy Awards® including Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
